Resetting isn’t failure — it’s a skill

We often treat missteps like proof we’re hopeless: “I’ve already messed it up, so what’s the point?” But the truth is, the ability to reset gently is one of the most important life tools there is. And, believe me when I tell you I'm a seasoned resetter and it has not come easy!  It is muscle I have had to train and the more I do it the stronger the muscle becomes; just like our beloved and vital strength training!

Resetting can mean you don’t throw away the whole day because of one decision. It means you stop seeing life as a tightrope, and start treating it more like a winding path, with space to pause, reroute and begin again. Like a satnav reroutes when you take a wrong turn, so can you.

My aim now is to make better decisions, more of the time, without pressure or perfectionism.

  • It’s not about rigid rules.

  • It’s not about becoming your “best self.”

  • It’s about noticing what’s helping, what’s not, and what your next small step could be.

When it comes to exercise, I know that it is so much easier to fall out of rather than fall into a habit.

It is easy to get knocked off your routine and for a negative and strong psychological barrier to build up, almost overnight as missing one class becomes two, two becomes a week and then a month and so on.....

I get it and I have worked with so many clients who have found themselves in this position and it does not make you a bad person.

If you are currently stuck in this place or any of this resonates, my advice is this:

  • Don’t overthink it.

  • Start really small (5 mins of stretching, a walk)

  • Build up really slowly (I mean at a snails pace)

  • Find something you enjoy

  • Explore whether there is a friend who you can buddy up with

  • Find a coach / class / teacher you like and where you feel comfortable

  • Always leave a class with something left to give, don’t complete all repetitions and leave with something left in the tank (that way your mind will file it as a protege experience and you may need to call on that for the next session!

  • Don’t push yourself so hard that you feel nauseous!

And remember you can reset or start over as many times as you like and unless you’re dead, it’s never too late.  And, anything is better than nothing and it all adds up and is beneficial to mind and body.

If you would like some support with resetting or starting please feel free to get in touch with me for a chat, I'm all ears.
